Varys Twist? New Theory

Thanks for stopping by!  For my first post, and in preparation for season 7, I thought it would be fun to open up discussion on 2 scenes from season 6 that I believe to be pretty important, and I have a few guesses on what could come of them.  Any Game of Thrones fan knows that Dave and Dan love giving hints throughout each episode, but many times you don't realize it was a hint till much later.  I believe that is what is taking place in these 2 scenes and hopefully we will get some answers in this upcoming season.

The first scene I want to discuss takes place in season 6, episode 2, titled "Home".  Davos asks Melisandre if she has ever saw someone be brought back from the dead.  She replied: "I met a man that came back from the dead, but the priest that did it...... It shouldn't have been possible."  Now right then and there, I immediately thought she was referring to when Thoros brought Beric back to life.  She did arrive shortly after he was brought back to life after The Hound killed him and was surprised he was able to come back so many times.  I was fine with that until I saw the second scene a few episodes later, and I'd like to get some opinions on it.

The scene takes place in Season 6 episode 5, called "The Door"(also known as the "Hodor episode").  Kinvara(the red witch) is standing before Tyrion and Varys speaking about how Daenerys was brought to them from the Lord of Light.  Varys is looking at her with hatred and interrupts her by referring to Melisandre as a fanatic and quickly pointed out that she counseled Stanis and he was defeated not only more than once, but he paid with his life in the final battle.  He also stated that the point of being a fanatic is that you always get to be right.  Kinvara does not back down and says "Men and women make mistakes, even honest servants of the Lord."  Varys shoots back with "Why should I trust you more than the priestess who counselled Stanis?"  Then she says the part that has me questioning everything: "Everyone is what they are and where they are for a reason.  Terrible things happen for a reason.  Take what happened to you Lord Varys when you were a child. If not for your mutilation at the hand of a second rate sorcerer, you wouldn't be here, helping the Lord's chosen bring his light into the world.  Knowledge has made you powerful, but there's still so much you don't know.  Do you remember what you heard that night, when the sorcerer tossed your parts into the fire?  You heard a voice call out from the flames. Do you remember?  Should I tell you what the voice said?"  This part alone makes me feel that we are in store for a surprise from him, especially since he looked more frightened than angry after she said that, and not to mention, we still don't know what the voice said.

Here are a few theories I have about why I feel these scenes may be connected, and what they could possibly be hinting at for the following 2 seasons:

1.  Was Melisandre really referring to Thoros and Beric?  Or could she possibly have been talking about The Sorcerer and Varys?  What if we find out that Varys had died when he was younger and the sorcerer brought him back to life by cutting off his parts and tossing them in the fire? Much like Melisandre cut Jon's hair just 3 episodes before and tossed it in the fire?  With the
talks of Varys possibly being Targaryen, I am really questioning his end game here.  He must be important because he was pictured alone in one of the few photos released by HBO, and he was wearing this:

                                          Photo: courtesy of HBO.

Looks like Dragonestone garb to me.....  Could they be confirming Targaryen here?  You decide.

2.  Is Varys a secret villian?  Leave it to GRRM and the show creators to take a character most seem to love and break our heart, much like dear sweet Hodor.  I think he has had a sinister character since the very beginning.  He is much like Little Finger.  The only difference is that Little Finger is honest about it.  He tells people to his face not to trust him.  He also has shown his sinister side when he had the sorcerer locked up in the crate.  We still don't know what happened to that guy.  Either way, I like him.  I could be totally wrong, but I think this is a possibility.

3.  If Varys is not a villian, could we see him die in the upcoming season for the greater good?  The fact that he looked terrified when Kinvara mentioned the voice in the fire, may be foreshadowing that Varys knows how, why, and when he is going to go.  I certainly hope this is not true, but again, the creators have never been shy about taking someone we love away.  Ahem.....Ned Stark?  Robb Stark?  Shireen Baratheon?  Jon Snow(albeit a brief time)?  And don't forget Hodor!

4.  This is really out in left field but..... The 2 episodes in question are titled "Home" and "Door", both pertaining to a house.  If there is an episode in this upcoming season titled anything referring to a house, we all better look out, all hell may break loose.  One title in particular that comes to my mind is, oh I don't know......  "THE WALL"!?!?  Yep.  I think that sucker is coming down this season.  Maybe episode 6 or 7.  Any thoughts out there on this one?  If it does come down, is season 7 too soon, or do you think with only 13 episodes total left in the series, it would make sense?

Again, I am very excited to open this discussion in the comments below.  Please feel free to email me with any thoughts as well!  Thank you for reading.

XOXO,

  1. So excited for the new season as well. I had many thoughts about what had happened to Varys as a child. I think there are some awesome things to come and some family ties we have yet to see.

Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 2 Review & Breakdown

With two of seven episodes under our belt we are full steam ahead in season 7.  This episode was way better than last week's drab catch up.  At least we didn't have to watch Sam clean chamber pots for 5 minutes.  Here is the episode breakdown:     The second episode of Game of Thrones Season 7, titled "Stormborn", starts out with just that.  A huge storm at Dragonstone with Daenerys looking out from the Chamber of the Painted Table(the big map room).     Tyrion starts off by reminding her that she was born during a storm just like this, which we all know due to her title of Daenerys Stormborn.  Varys chimes in and recalls his memory of the evening with dogs howling through the night.  She doesn't seem very amused and tells them that she wishes she could remember it, and that it does not feel like a homecoming.  Tyrion reassures her by advising they wouldn't stay at Dragonstone for very long and she is please...

Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 7 "The Dragon and the Wolf" Breakdown & Review

The GoT season 7 finale was a pretty epic one.  More happened in this episode than any other, in my opinion.  It certainly helped that the episode was about an hour and fifteen minutes long.  After last week's atrocious episode, I think they owed us some fan service, and to answer some questions that the book readers have been waiting about 25 years for, the show watchers a mere 7.  They delivered that and more.  Like most of the show's finales, this one left most of us on the edge of our seat, just to realize that we will now have to wait to 2019 to see how these last six episodes of the series will wrap up this wonderful tale of Ice and Fire.  Let's break this sucker down, it was a doozy.     The Unsullied are standing at Kings Landing, Grey Worm at the lead.  Jaime is looking overhead and Bronn comes to join him after giving a few more orders to men putting oil in barrels.  Bronn looks down at the army and says, "Men...

Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 4 "The Spoils of War" Breakdown & Review

The fourth episode of season 7 has left me pretty much speechless.  I truly could not find words to describe it.  This one left episode 2 and the Euron battle look like a Care Bears movie.  I have included as many pictures as I can, but pics do not do it justice.  It is a must see.  I understand that the episode was leaked online due to a hacker situation that HBO suffered this week, which anyone that watched it early did a major disservice.  I stayed away from the internet on purpose to avoid having it spoiled.  I like watching it when everyone else does.  So, if my review is posted later than most, at least you know it was done honestly.  The people who posted their review 5 minutes after the show aired.....  screw you, and I hope you trust a fart and shit your pants instead in front of a coworker.     The episode begins with Jamie, Bron, and the Lannister armies on the move.  Jamie opens up the gold cart...
