The theory that Tyrion Lannister is a Targaryen has been floating around for years. There are multiple YouTube videos dedicated to it and most of them state several good reasons to back up this hypothesis. I like to imagine him as a Targaryen as well, but what if we are completely wrong and we are reading too much into the 3 dragon riders triad?
As someone who has only read the 1st book, but has seen the whole series front to back 7-8 times, I often look to my friends who have read the entire ASOIAF series to see how the books and the show differ. I also like to hear about what the show has left out. Since the TV series has passed the book story line, it is getting difficult now to find out what is missing and how this thing is going to come to an end. In speaking with a good friend about the "Tyrion being a Targaryen" theory, he pointed out that we may be in for a real shock from what he feels the books were leading him to think. He thinks that we may be on the right track but what if it isn't Tyrion that is a Targaryen, but it is Cersei and Jamie??? I immediately brushed it off but he thinks that we may find out some shocking news this season when there is a battle at Casterly Rock. Here are a couple reasons why he may actually be on the right track:
1. Tywin openly despised Tyrion. We have been using this as one of the reasons we think that Tywin is not Tyrion's father. We look at how Tywin treated Tyrion time and time again, ultimately leading to his own demise, and our impression is that he hates him because he is a dwarf, killed his mother in childbirth, and the shame of having a "monster" for a son. What if we are off on his anger toward him? What if he treated him like that because he knows that the only legitimate child that he had was deformed and he did not have that "perfect" male heir to take over Casterly Rock? He was mean to Jamie and Cersei too and was always quick to point out his disappointment in both of them. Tywin also makes it clear that he will not look like a fool in public. What shame would come of him if his own wife cheated on him and produced illegitimate children? How can he be Warden of the West and have the respect and fear of the people of the West if he can't keep his own wife in line in his own house? It seems to me, he would keep this a very closely guarded secret rather than expose his wife and her bastard children. Not only that, but he received a male and female heir in the deal when he did not yet have one. Makes sense...
2. We will see Casterly Rock for the first time in season 7. Why? As one of the major family names on the show, we have yet to see this amazing castle of wealth and power, belonging to house Lannister. I understand we had no reason to see it yet, as all the Lannisters important to the story have perched themselves around the iron throne at Kings Landing, but we have seen many others, like Samwell Tarly's home and he is a much smaller role than the Lannisters. Could they be holding out for the big "Maury Povich, who is your daddy" reveal party to celebrate at Casterly Rock? Something big is going to take place there, and I am not referring to battle scenes ladies and gentlemen.
3. I cannot recall who said it or it what season for that matter, but didn't someone say as a rebuttal "There are many people with gold hair that aren't Lannisters" I want to say it was Tyrion, or maybe Brienne? I know I heard this on the show. If someone out there knows off hand, please feel free to leave the answer in the comments so I can look it up and watch that part a little closer. The writers love to throw in little one liners like this to make fans pull their hair out later for missing it. In season 1, when Bran had the vision of Ned in the crypt and he goes to investigate the following day, Rickon and Shaggydog take him and Osha by surprise, scaring them. After a few exchanges about their family Bran says something like mother and father will be home soon and Rickon responds with a spooky "No they won't". We later find out that he was correct. What if this little one liner about the Lannister golden hair is a hint? Certainly something to think about.
4. Targaryen's are known for their incestual relations. Even Cersei herself pointed it out in defense of her and Jamies's relationship. Maybe Jamie rattled off this line as well, if I recall correctly? Cersei is also known for fiercely defending her family and Jamie is known for defending Cersei. What if she is defending the family that she never knew she had out of instinct? This could also be grooming us for a Dany/Jon union of some sort, even though I hope that is not the case.
5. Cersei has been referred to as the Mad Queen. Like father like daughter? Cersei thinks she is more like Tywin than either of her brothers. But if you stop to think about it, she is really more like Aerys Targaryen. She loved making Wildfire below the city in secret, and by the buttload, might I add. She also is responsible for carrying out the last words that the Mad King uttered by blowing up the Sept and "buring them all". Wouldn't it also be pretty sweet to have Jamie find out that he killed his own father? It would give him and Tyrion something to bond over for sure! Also, after the way they shocked us with the simplicity of why Hodor was called and only said the word Hodor(don't tell me you didn't cry), don't think for a minute we wouldn't have a another shocking parentage reveal to leave us speechless.
6. Have we seen Cersei near fire, or ever get burned? I don't believe so. We found out(not so much found out, but confirmed) Jon was half Targaryen last season and he burned his hand defending the Lord Commander Mormont earlier on in the series, showing he is not a dragon. Not to mention, he is known as the White Wolf, and he also happens to have one by his side. One of Dany's titles is "The Unburnt". What if Cersei is also an "Unburnt", yet unknown sister?
I hope this theory is all wrong. I admit when my friend told me about this possibility, I argued my case once again about Tyrion, his mother dying in childbirth and the dragons not burning him alive when he unchained them, yada yada. I have sat on this thought for over 24 hours now and I can't stop myself from thinking that it really does make sense that Tywin would lie about Cersei and Jamie, and that Tyrion may not be a Targaryen after all. I would still like to see him as a dragon rider regardless. Who knows? Maybe Ed Sheeran is really Jaqen H'ghar posing for the Many Faced god. At this point, anything is possible.
